Christ in the Old Testament

Throughout the Old Testament there are very many foreshadowing and prophecies of Jesus Christ. The prophets paint a picture of what the coming Messiah might look like. The Psalms foreshadow His life and personality. These aren’t the only things that tell us about Christ however. There were people described in the Old Testament that were “types” of Christ. To say that someone is a type of someone else means that their lives had parallels and similarities. Some examples of types of Christ found in the Old Testament are: Adam, Isaac, Joseph, Moses, David, Solomon, Jonah, Job. The first type of Christ found in the Bible is Adam. We can see a parallel between Adam and Jesus in the gardens. In the garden of Eden, Adam disobeyed God by eating the forbidden fruit. Adam did not trust that God was in control and knew what was best for him, instead Adam thought that God was trying to keep him from being as powerful as Himself. Adam said “no” to God’s will by eating the fruit. At the start of Jesu...

Praising the Lord in the Hard Times: When Tragedy Strikes

God and I had a bit of a reckoning not too long ago. I was in adoration at a retreat and filled with so many questions. I rested my head on the edge of the pew in front of me and let myself cry while asking God question after question. People around me seemed to be having their questions answered, they were finding their way, they were experiencing Jesus in a way they maybe never had before. But not me. For the first time in a long time I felt as if I couldn't trust Jesus. I had been in need of healing and was not receiving it. How could I trust Him if I was hurt and not helped?   A religious sister I was praying near leaned over and whispered to me. "Did you remember to give Jesus your heart after?" I was confused. What did she mean after? Picking up on my confusion, she explained to me that oftentimes when we first encounter God we are able to build a child like dependency on God. When we experience a tragedy, it can cause part of us to grow up. We can become adults and...

Thomas More: A Saint for Today

Image
Born in 1478, Saint Thomas More was a lawyer, statesman, and the Lord Chancellor of England, among a few other titles. Thomas was also a father and husband. Thomas was good friends with the king of England, Henry VIII, who eventually had him killed. During his reign, Henry tried to divorce his wife, Catherine, who was barren. He intended to marry Anne Bolyen. To do this, Henry separated from Rome and declared himself Holy Roman Emperor.  When Henry sought Thomas’s opinion on this separation, Thomas remained silent. But Thomas's silence spoke volumes. By remaining silent he asserted his allegiance to the Catholic Church, and to the State, but not to the actions of the King.  His silence, while eventually resulting in his martyrdom, provides an example for Catholics living in a post Christian culture.  Thomas was a lawyer and statesman during the reign of King Henry VIII. Henry was married at the time to his late brother’s wife, Catherine. Henry received a special dispensat...

Our Life, Our Sweetness, and Our Hope: Am I Not Here, I Who Am Your Mother?

Image
In December 1531, Our Lady Appeared to a young man named Juan Diego, a native Mexican, on Tepeyac Hill in Mexico. The story of the apparitions of Our Lady of Guadalupe is known by many Catholics and Christians alike, On December 9th, 1531, Mary appeared to Juan Diego, a young Catholic on his way to mass. She asked Juan Diego to visit the Bishop and ask him to build a chapel in her honor on Tepeyac hill. Obediently, Juan Diego went to the Bishop and requested the chapel, however the Bishop wanted time to consider the matter. As Juan Diego walked home, He encountered Our Lady again and told her the Bishop had denied his request at the time. Mary asked Juan to ask again. The next day, Juan asked the Bishop for the Chapel again. The Bishop was not convinced of the authenticity of the apparition and request, so he asked for a sign. Two days later, Juan avoided seeing Our Lady as he was finding a priest to administer the sacraments to his dying uncle. Our Lady stopped Juan and assured him th...

Our Life, Our Sweetness, and Our Hope: the Immaculate Conception

Image
Hi friends!  Today I want to talk about someone who I love ALOT, the Mother of God, the Immaculate Conception, Mary. Last month was the month of Mary, but since I was quite busy I didn't have the time to compose a few articles about her. Even though it's no longer the month of Mary, there's no wrong time to discuss her, so the next few articles will be part of a series titled "Our Life, Our Sweetness, and Our Hope". Each article will discuss a different aspect of Mary! Some will be an explanation on Marian doctrines and Dogmas, others will be more like reflections. Disclaimer: I have not run these by a Catholic Priest as I am currently unable to do so, that being said, I am most certainly not infallible, while I have researched all of these topics and try my best to make sure everything I say is true and correct, there is a chance that some of the things I say are not 100% correct. I will list sources for my research at the end of the article!  Let's kick this...

My Favorite Catholic Podcasts: Part 1

Hey friends,  I am on a podcast kick recently. I've been listening to A LOT of Catholic podcasts, so I decided to share my favorite ones with you guys. Project Siena is not affiliated with any of these podcasts, I'm just sharing them cause I like them :)  So first I want to talk about the Catholic Talk Show . I really love this podcast! Each of these podcasts breaks down their subjects into smaller portions, reads through, and expl...

Praising the Lord in the Hard Times: When You Hit Your Knees

Image
Have you ever had such a hard time that you hit your knees? Something so physically or mentally exhausting that you fall to your knees just to take a breath? Within the past year or so, I've had a lot of those moments. They almost force you to be vulnerable, they knock the air out of you and leave you asking why. Something beautiful about those moments though, is noticing where you are in them, on your knees. The beautiful part about hitting your knees is realizing that whatever is going on that brought you there, you can bring to God.  Catholics and Christians alike pray on their knees. It's a sign of humility, kneeling before the King of Kings in prayer. We can use these vulnerable moments to pray. We're already on our knees, why not pray? As I said in an article about prayer not too long ago, prayer is lifting your heart to God. God wants your heart, whether it be a heart that is angry, a heart that is sad, a heart that is hurt or confused or sorrowful or suffering. He...

54 Day Rosary Novena Challenge

Hey Friends!!  Our Lady of Fatima in her apparitions asked us to pray the Rosary every single day. Well that can be a little hard can't it? How are we supposed to fit such a seemingly long prayer into our every day lives? Well, it seems hard, but it all depends on how much we are willing to commit. If we woke up fifteen minutes earlier, or went to bed fifteen minutes later, cut out fifteen minutes of extra tv or phone time, or turned the music down during a drive, we would all be able to fit a Rosary into our day. Let's try to build that habit together, friends!! Starting on May 31st, the feast of Mary's Visitation, let's start the 54 Day Rosary Novena. Every day I will send out a blog post with the prayers and an email reminder. Anyone who signs up and logs their rosary will have their rosaries counted and added to the Rosary Count which will be live on the blog on May 31st. At the end of the challenge, hopefully we will have completed several hundred Rosaries even if ...
